Student Accesses Specialized Program
Susie, a 7 year old, with autism and mental illness, was expelled from school. Instead of learning all day in the classroom, the school system told her parents that she would only receive 1 hour of instruction per week.
Her dad was devastated. He knew she’d never learn math and reading if she didn’t attend school.
He contacted the Advocacy Center for help. He wanted Susie placed in an alternative program with expertise and special services for kids with behavioral disabilities.
An AC advocate attended a meeting and was able to show that Susie’s behavior was related to her disability.
The expulsion was overturned and Susie is now in the specialized program. She is doing much better. Her mom and dad are running out of space to display all her tests with better grades and positive comments. Last time the AC advocate spoke to Susie’s dad, he said, “Every morning when I wake Suzie up for school, I’m thankful for your help.”
