Hurricane Season Is Upon Us Again

The Advocacy Center has a hurricane disaster plan in place that ensures continued operations to the extent possible. In the event of office closures, AC telephones will still be answered, and staff will monitor shelters as resources allow to make sure that people with disabilities and seniors are accommodated.

Take Action: Speak Up About the Needs of People with Disabilities After a Disaster

The U.S. Access Board's proposed regulation on emergency transportable housing (FEMA trailers) fails to designate a minimum percentage of trailers that will be accessible. Let them know that without these minimum percentage standards, we risk leaving the members of our community with mobility impairments behind after an emergency!

Louisiana Coalition on Disaster Preparedness Receives National Recognition

Eye of Hurricane ImageAfter the 2005 hurricanes and floods, Advocacy Center adopted emergency preparedness for people with disabilities as one of its major priorities. Having witnessed the complete lack of accommodation for people with disabilities during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, AC resolved that the next time disaster struck Louisiana, people with disabilities would receive the supports they need.
