AC Files Suit Against Amtrak for ADA Violations

The Advocacy Center of Louisiana and the Mid Minnesota Disability Law Center recently filed a federal suit in the Eastern District of Louisiana against the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rehabilitation Act, and associated state law anti-discrimination claims.

The suit is filed on behalf of Minnesota residents Beatrice and Augustus Alvarez, who, after visiting family in New Orleans, were turned away from the same train they arrived on because Mrs. Alvarez uses a power wheelchair.

Mrs. Alvarez and her husband moved to Minnesota after Hurricane Katrina, but still consider New Orleans home. Mrs. Alvarez has reiterated that she wants to be able to visit her grandchildren during holidays without fear of discriminatory treatment.
